Northeast South Dakota Area Hunting
& Fishing History and Facts
Northeast South Dakota probably is the richest and most diverse
wildlife mecca on the North American continent. We are in the
prairie pothole region that extends into Canada and is the most
productive waterfowl hatchery in the world. We are situated
in the
Central Flyway and see millions of waterfowl pass through this
region annually. Our sloughs, lakes and farmlands provide the
perfect combination for nesting and habitat for fish and wildlife. |

Deer, ducks, geese, grouse, pheasants, as well as
many other forms of wildlife animals thrive, prosper and reproduce
in this region. If it were not for this region, the giant Canada
goose probably would have been extinct. The pheasant hunting would
not have been here, because in this area, is where it all really
started. The fishing and hunting in this area sits and belongs in
the front seat of any fisherman's or hunter's portfolio.
Walleyes, Northern Pike and Jumbo Perch are teaming
in these prairie lakes like you would not believe. There are hundreds
of these glacial pothole lakes just waiting to be fished and many
of them have never been fished. With extreme high amounts of precipitation
in the last decade, new lakes have shown up all over this region.
We are now known as one of the best walleye regions in the world.
Some of the richest families in the world have used
this Glacial lakes Region to hunt and fish in the early nineteen-hundreds.
Those recognizable names include the Rothchild's, Cargill's, Dupont's,
Rockefeller's, the Ford family as well as moguls of the railroads
and many others all had their hunting and fishing lodges here in
this very area. They came because of the diversity and quality this
area had to offer.
